Unilever is reaching out to Latinas with a new Web site, www.Vivemejor.com, which offers tips from celebrity stylist Leonardo Rocco and chef Marcela Valladolid. Coca-Cola Invests $5 Billion in Mexico
Coca-Cola Chairman and CEO Muhtar Kent says the company and its bottlers will invest $5 billion in Mexico over the next five years, to "develop infrastructure, technology, equipment, social programs, environmental initiatives, marketing activities, and grow our training and product portfolios with special emphasis on job protection and family economies," Kent said. U.S.- Top Supplier of Soft Drinks to Mexico
The U.S. continues to be among the top five suppliers of soft drinks to Mexico despite Mexico's recent imposition of a 20% import duty, according to USDA. Health and wellness campaigns promoted by the Mexican government are expected to continue to the hinder growth of high-sugar carbonates in 2009 and beyond. As a result, market analysts predict that demand for diet soft drinks will continue to grow as they are perceived by Mexican consumers as being a healthier option. Full Story 8/25

Chilean Production of Apricots, Plums, Peaches and Nectarines Expected to Drop
Chilean production in 2009/2010 is expected to fall slightly when compared to the previous year due to alternate bearing effect and weather predictions that call for unusual rain during next spring and summer. Planted areas for all except cherries fell again. Falling economic returns as a result of a revaluation of the Chilean peso against the dollar and increasing production costs encouraged many farmers to uproot low producing orchards with the exception of cherries, according to FAS. Economic Recession Increases Consumers' Desire for Snacks
The snack food industry will register some $82 billion in sales by 2013, a 20% increase from 2008, according to Sweet and Salty/Savory Snacks in the U.S.: Lifestyle Marketing and New Product Development in the New Economy, 3rd Edition by Packaged Facts. This increased desire stems in part from the recession, which has snack consumers embracing a value mentality that prizes quality and whole ingredients, better-for-you recipes and green production practices. While low prices are a draw, consumers are seeking snacks with fewer additives or preservatives, and are spending extra dollars for organic and premium snack treats. Full Story 8/24

Canada - No. 1 Market for U.S. Agricultural Exports
In 2008 U.S. agricultural exports to Canada reached a record $16.2 billion. U.S. agricultural exports to Canada accounted for 14% of total U.S. food and agricultural product exports of $115.4 billion. Consumer-oriented agricultural products accounted for 74% of total U.S. food and agricultural product sales to Canada in 2008 with fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, snack foods, breakfast cereals, processed horticultural products and red meat products the category leaders, noted USDA. U.S. Food Prices Expected to Rise again by 3%
Consumers soon can expect higher prices on dairy products, meat, eggs and other grocery items, according to a report from the federal government. Prices are expected to jump 2% to 3% this year as the economy recovers. Full Story 8/25

Brazilian Water Catches on in the U.S.
Drink makers are starting to invest money into marketing campaigns for coconut water, a popular drink in Brazil, that is now catching on in the U.S. Claiming that coconut water is on the brink of "becoming significant," Beverage Digest editor and publisher John Sicher states that the drink is "growing fast because it's seen as a natural product, it's relatively low in calories and has a lot of potassium," reported The Wall Street Journal. The bottled water market is forecast to grow by a compound annual growth rate of 5.3% in Europe, the U.S. and Japan, reaching $76.4 billion by 2012, according to the Research and Markets' Future Opportunities in Bottled Water: Leveraging Purity, Ethical and Health Credentials report.
