Restaurant Brands Appearing in Supermarket Aisles
Restaurant chains are increasingly looking to attract grocery store shoppers to help offset restaurant losses. For instance, Burger King Holdings, Inc. plans to sell its Apple Fries in 10,000 grocery stores nationwide this fall. California Pizza Kitchen Inc. saw supermarket sales of frozen pizza increase 19.6% to $159 million last year, reported The Wall Street Journal. "Restaurants are thinking, 'If we can't capture those consumers in our own stores, we'll get them at home and, when the economy improves, they'll return to our stores,'" stated Bill Cross, vice president of food licensing at Broad Street Licensing Group. Colombian Coffee Production & Exports to Reduce
Colombian coffee production is expected to decline by 1.3 million 60-kg. bags in 2008/2009, noted FAS. Exports are also expected to fall by 556,000 60-kg. bags due to lower production. Reduced international stocks of Colombian coffee increased the value of premiums received by the grower. Full Story 6/10

U.S. Restaurants Focus on Value
Deals drive sales at U.S. restaurants, but elsewhere in the world, marketers focus on introducing new products. In the 4th quarter of 2008, foodservice spending increased in the U.S., although it decreased abroad in countries such as Japan. Brandweek 6/8

Brazil Sugar Mills Reach Capacity
Sugar mills in Brazil are making the sweetener at full capacity and cannot increase output further to meet rising demand, according to the Brazil's Center for South Sugar and Ethanol Industry Association. The group maintains its forecast for output of 31.2 million tons in the current April-November harvest, stated Antonio Padua, the group's technical director, reported Bloomberg.com. Full Story 6/2

Colombia Is the Largest U.S. Agricultural Market in South America
Colombia is the largest U.S. agricultural market in South America, accounting for about 47% of U.S. agricultural exports to the region for a value of $1.22 billion in 2007 and $1.7 billion in 2008. The U.S. is Colombia's largest trading partner, accounting for 26% of imports and 35% of exports, according to ERS. Full Report 6/2

US Senators Supporting Agricultural Exports to Cuba
Seventeen senators introduced a bill easing U.S. trade restrictions to Cuba, the Promoting American Agricultural and Medical Exports to Cuba Act of 2009, S. 1089. The bill would help U.S. farmers and ranchers export their products to Cuba by allowing timely and direct cash payments for agricultural goods. The bill also requires USDA to promote U.S. agricultural exports to Cuba. Full Story 6/2

Nielsen Predicts Partial Loosening of Consumer Purse Strings
A Nielsen survey shows that consumers plan to spend more once the recession ends, but not as much as previously. "Moderation will be key, and you may see consumers begin to trade up and move back to mainstream retailers," said James Russo, vice president of global consumer insights. Progressive Grocer 6/8

Private Label Growth Slows
Sales of private label products, though still growing, are tapering off due to signs of an economic recovery on the horizon, price increases abating and consumer confidence on the rise, according to analysts. The private label sector lost a 0.8 unit share point in the food, drug and mass channels during the four weeks ended Apr. 18, compared to the same period a year ago, according to the Nielsen Co., reported Brandweek.
