Food Lion Caters to Latinos
Food Lion has plans to convert more stores to be more focused on Hispanic customers. The grocery stores have expanded selections of items such as beans and tortillas, and the staff is trained in Hispanic culture and the Spanish language. Full Story 7/11

Cadbury Brazil to Invest R$3m in Renewal of Chiclets Brand
Cadbury Brazil has revamped packaging for the Chiclets gum brand and hopes to reach people in the 14- to 17-year-old market with a sleek new look. In Brazil, the Refreshing Fusion flavor - a mix of mint, cherry and orange is now available. Full Story 7/16

US Market for Meat, Poultry and Seafood Packing to Top $9 Billion by 2013
An expansion in U.S. meat, poultry and seafood production and a continuing shift to case-ready packaging by retailers will be the main drivers for the sectors topping $9 billion by 2013, according to the Meat, Poultry and Seafood Packaging study from The Freedonia Group. The study also claims that demand will also be boosted by changes in packing practices, such as the increasing prevalence of meat, poultry and seafood items in smaller, more convenient sizes and expansion of product ranges. Dole Launches Hispanic-Focused Campaign for Juice Line
A new ad campaign from Dole Food Co. makes an appeal to Hispanic consumers with the tagline, "Sacándole jugo a la vida," or "Squeeze the most out of life." The company also is providing entertainment and free juice at local parks. Full Story 7/21

Canadian Organic Food Market Reaches C$2.6 Billion
The retail value of organic food in the Canadian market reached an estimated C$2.1 to C$2.6 billion in 2008, noted FAS. The main categories of organic food sales in supermarkets are: fresh fruits and vegetables at 41%, beverages at 17% and prepared foods at 14% with much of the remainder made up of packaged organic foods. The market is reportedly growing at 15-20% per year with domestic production increasing at an estimated 4%. FAS Report 7/22

Senate Moves to Ease Restrictions on Trade with Cuba
The Senate Appropriations Committee approved July 10 by a 29-1 vote legislation that would remove restrictions on exports of agricultural and medical goods to Cuba. The House version reportedly includes a similar provision. The Senate's fiscal year 2010 financial services appropriations bill includes a provision sponsored by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., that would allow agricultural and medical products to be exported to Cuba so long as cash payment is obtained before the goods are delivered. Full Story 7/16

Organic Coffee Posts Surprising 12% Gain in Volume
Imports of organic coffee to the U.S. and Canada grew 12% by volume in 2008, an unexpected surge during the economic crunch. "We were looking for a potential disaster," said the industry consultant who conducted the survey and expected consumers to shun higher-priced coffee to save money. Full Story 7/21

Big Chilean Avocado Crop Expected
The Chilean avocado industry expects to export 310 million pounds to the U.S. in the 2009-2010 season after two years of reduced volumes following a devastating 2007 freeze. Fruit is expected to begin arriving in July and ship through March 2010, reported The Packer Online. Full Story (Subscription Required) 7/23

Mexican Organics Sector Continues to Grow
The Mexican organics sector is comprised of a large number of smaller operations and the land area planted with organics continues to grow, according to FAS. Domestic consumption of organic products grew rapidly during the past few years and approximately 15% of production is consumed locally compared to 2% to 3% a few years ago. The most demanded organic products are fresh fruits and vegetables, poultry and eggs, meat and dairy products. Imported products currently supply 10% to 15% of the demand and the U.S. accounts for over 80% of this market share. FAS Report 7/21

Mexican Market for Fruit & Vegetable Juices Continues to Grow
Demand for juices in Mexico continues to increase as local production tries to keep pace. The U.S. continues to be the largest foreign supplier of juices to Mexico and that trend is expected to continue. The Mexican government is considering changing the definition of what constitutes a juice product. FAS Report 7/21

Prospects for Food Safety Legislation Uncertain
There has been a considerable amount of pushback on a House bill that would overhaul the imported and domestic food safety system. Small U.S. growers and producers have expressed opposition to the bill's requirement for them to register with the Food and Drug Administration and pay a registration fee, which foreign growers would be subject to as well. Other entities are also becoming involved as the full extent of the bill, which aims to ensure the security of the entire food supply chain, becomes clear. Full Story

Energy Shots Stimulate Power Drink Sales
Energy shot sales are expected to reach about $700 million this year, up from about $370 million last year, according to IRI figures cited by Consumer Edge Research chief executive Bill Pecoriello. The most devoted drinkers are college students, drivers and construction workers. A 7-Eleven store in College Park, MD, one of the chain's top sellers of energy shots, recently sold almost 400 shots during finals week, reported The New York Times on the Web. Full Story 7/10
