BCG Education Fund Workshop

Putting Skills to Work:  Evaluation & Documentation

Tuesday, 13 May 2008  8:45 am - 4:00 pm

Hyatt Regency Crown Center

Plan to attend the annual all-day Board for Certification of Genealogists Education Fund Workshop as part of your conference experience. Open to all genealogists.  You do not have to register for the conference to attend.  The workshop registration fee of $90 includes two 3-hour workshops, lunch in the hotel, and a syllabus.

The workshops will provide hands-on practice in two important genealogical skills: evaluating evidence and documenting genealogical research. All attendees will participate in sessions about both topics. Each session will include lecture time to review the pertinent standards, hands-on practice time, a review of the practice sessions, and a final wrap-up. Barbara Matthews, CG, will conduct the session on evaluation and Thomas W. Jones, CG, CGL, will lead the session on documentation.

Evidence Evaluation - by Barbara J. Mathews, CG

Students in the hands-on workshop on evidence evaluation will have the opportunity to support different points-of-view based on analysis of documents supplied in the syllabus.  We will investigate situations in which all evidence is in agreement, in which some evidence is in conflict, and for which only indirect evidence is available. After supporting their points of view in small group discussions, students will plan proof summaries.

Genealogical Documentation: What, Why and How - Thomas W. Jones, Ph.D., CG, CGL

Participants in this hands-on workshop will learn the principles of documenting compiled genealogies, reports, lineages, and other written genealogical products. The session will cover when and what to document and the formats for documenting different kinds of sources.

Be sure to register early as attendance is limited to 60 people.  For more information check the BCG website at: www.bcgcertification.org/educationfund/index/htm.

Show Me Missouri Wines - Wine and Cheese Reception
Reception from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center $15 per person, includes wine selections from Missouri vineyards, along with cheese and fruit.  Harry S. Truman (portrayed by Niel Johnson) will be on hand to welcome attendees to this reception - come and speak to Harry Truman and learn his views on women in politics and how he might view the current political arena.  Sponsored by the Missouri State Genealogical Association.

Kansas City Tour
$47 per person
Explore the history of the Kansas City area on a special guided tour designed by the local host committee. You'll begin with a visit to the Truman Presidential Museum and Library in Independence, where exhibits tell the story of both his personal and presidential lives, and drive by his nearby home. From there, you'll travel to the National Frontier Trails Museum in Independence Square for the story of overland migration in the mid-1800s. Exhibits, artifacts, and words from trail diaries will guide you along the Santa Fe, Oregon and California Trails. Perhaps one of your ancestors traveled the same route. Independence Square also offers the opportunity to visit the Jackson County Courthouse and to select from a variety of restaurants for lunch on your own.  Finally, at the Arabia Steamboat Museum in Kansas City, you'll see a treasure trove of the necessities and luxuries of 1856 life, all items that were hidden by the Missouri River for 132 years. Even if our ancestors were not passengers on the ill-fated Arabia, they likely used the same type of goods. You will return to the hotel (Hyatt Regency Crown Center) by 4:30pm.
